Murtinheira and Quiaios
Located just the other side of “the mountain” headland of Figueira da Foz the beach runs unbroken as far as the eye can see and provides a number of sand bar breaks all very close together at the foot of the mountain in Murtinheira and Quiaios.
These breaks need very little swell to work as they’re much more exposed to swells than other beaches in the area. The sand bars shift during the year but there’re 3 peaks which are quite consistent providing fast hollow waves at lower tides and fater mellower waves at higher tides.
This is generally an extremely quiet location with a huge beach and makes for a very dramatic scene with the mountain raising from the beach. You’ll also often find that even though these beaches are more exposed to the north they escape the northerly winds which are forced up over the mountain from further out at sea making a pocket of calmness on the beach and breaks.
Get a good day in Murtinheira and you will never forget it.
