Surfing Buarcos

Buarcos at the north end of Figueira beach is home to countless point breaks all the way to Cabo Mondego, the headland of Figueira often refered to by locals as “the mountain”.

The point breaks here are generated at lower tides by the sand bars at the end of the buarcos reefs and at a higher tides break over the reefs depending how big the swell is.

Most of the time Buarcos breaks are very long mellow easy to handle right hand waves, you can ride it at over head and a half easily most of the time – but don’t get carried away with riding the wave as long as it’ll take you, you still need to get back to the peak!

In bigger punchier swells with longer periods these peaks hollow out into very fast moving spitty beasts. In these bigger swells points join together making one of the longest right hand breaks in Europe – you’ll see locals getting in by the mountain and surfing the 4km back to Figueira main beach with someone driving a car to pick them up and take them back to the mountain. Taxi!
