Surf Spot - Figueira da Foz Main Beach
For years Figueira da Foz's main beach, the widest in Europe, has mainly just been a huge shore break and not somewhere you would want to take a surf board or bodyboard but this has all changed.
Thanks to the new harbour wall extension which has been going on over 2009 / 2010 the sea bed of Figueira's main beach has completely changed. Solid sand bars have formed at the south end of the beach next to the harbour wall, and due to the swell coming straight in from deep water unbroken this wave is heavy, hollow and the spot picks up tons of swell.
So far this season this surf break has been working best on westerly and south westerly swells, when the swell has any north in it - things get a little crazy with the wedge which is created off the harbour wall, although this may well be interesting in smaller summer swells.
Best of all, this surf spot is only 5 minutes walk from our front door - happy days!
Check out the photo gallery below, and have a look at the video we've made of some of Portugal's finest bodyboarders tearing it up at the main beach in April 2010:
Seems all that work on the harbour wall has paid off! Check out these bodyboard photos, the first of many photos to come from Figueira main beach.
