Nazare- a beautiful day-trip destination south of Figueira da Foz

Your best route to Nazare is by bus or car. By bus, the journey will take 2 and a half hours with two changes (€12); by car you’ll get there in an hour.

A beautiful seaside town with stunning churches, Nazare is popular with Portuguese and international tourists alike. Worth visiting for the aqua- blue sea that’s protected from the wind by a large cliff at the North end of the beach. Drive up to the cliff, or take the funicular railway, and you’ll find yourself in the old-town with an un-paralleled view of the azure Atlantic Ocean.

Nazare is a renowned big-wave spot, and a must-visit, for surfers who want to experience all that the Atlantic coast of Portugal has to offer. Make sure you visit when swells are pumping and other spots won’t hold out.

A visit to Nazare should always include a spot of sea-food at lunch time, preferably sitting outside a cafe in the old town whilst bathed in sunshine. Follow lunch with some culture and take a gentle walk to the Church of Nossa Senhora da Nazare, a beautiful traditionally Portuguese church, which is home to the ‘miraculous image of Our Lady of Nazare.’
