Conimbriga- Roman remains close to Figueira da Foz
One of the largest- and recognised as the best-preserved- Roman settlements in Portugal, Conimbriga is categorised as a National Monument and lies just 16k from Coimbra, accessible by bus or car.
Conimbriga is worth a visit for the number of Roman archaeological sites that you will see: the city wall remain largely intact, there are various impressive mosaic floors and foundations of Roman houses as well as the baths where it is possible to see the network of heating pipes that were laid beneath the floors of houses during Roman times (they invented under-floor heating!).
Conimbriga is a site of historical layers, with the first dating back to the Iron Age (ninth Century B.C), this was built upon during the Roman period that stretched from 139 B.C to 468 A.D. when the area was invaded by Barbarians.
As well as all of the above attractions, the site also includes a museum displaying finds from the archaeological digs at Conimbriga as well as a cafe and restaurant.
